Administrative history

St Mary Magdalene's Parish was originally founded as the Woodlawn Church of England Mission. The first Sunday School classes, organized in 1897, were held in people's homes. When the Woodlawn School was built in 1909, classes were held there. Pastoral work was initially supplied by St Philip's Parish, Norwood. Worship services were held in the home of the Sobeys until the congregation became too large. Service was then moved to the auditorium of the Norberry School. Rooms were also rented above Ostgard's Meat Market on St Mary's Road but only one service was held there. The building was lost to fire, forcing the congregation to search for other accommodations. Space was eventually rented from a store next door to the former meat shop and services were held there until 1926 when a church was built at the present site. It opened in November of that year. Also in 1926, the mission was organized as St Mary Magdalene's Parish. Additions to the church were made in 1931, including a parish hall, a vestry, a classroom and a kitchen. A rectory was built in 1947. During the flood in 1950, services were held in a fire hall on the corner of St. Mary's Road and St. Anne's. In 1957, construction began on a basement and church structure. The cornerstone for the new church was dedicated on 24 October 1964 by Bishop J.O. Anderson. The church was opened 24 Decemeber 1964 and dedicated 28 February 1965. The church was consecrated on the Parish's anniversary of its Diamond Jubilee on 4 October 1986.
