History

The Winnipeg Sketch Club was formed in affiliation with the Winnipeg School of Art, its purpose being to encourage and develop artistic expression amongst students and art lovers in the West. Founded in 1914 by A. J. Musgrove, the first principal of the Winnipeg School of Art and the Director of the Winnipeg Art Gallery. Its first annual exhibition was held in February 1916. Well known artist have joined the Winnipeg Sketch Club since its founding such as Frank Johnston, Lemoine Fitzgerald, Clarence Tillenius, Peter Kuch, Eric Bergman, Jack Markell, Charles Comfort, Lynn Sissons, Neil Hoogstraten and Leo Mol.
