Administrative history
In 1891, The Winnipeg General Hospital’s first machine-operated laundry facility was built. The WGH Laundry service operated for several decades, during which, several new laundry facilities were built to help accommodate the increasing workload of the laundry. Throughout its earlier years many of the laundry’s linens were provided by the Women’s Hospital Aid Society, who also fundraised to help keep the laundry operating smoothly. In 1966, WGH opened its fourth and largest laundry facility.
Laundry service continued to operate under the control of the Winnipeg General Hospital until 1968, when it was incorporated into a separate company as Winnipeg Hospital Laundry Limited, designed to provide laundry services to all major hospitals in the Winnipeg area. In order to help accommodate this change in service, WHLL formed a Linen Standardization Committee to standardize all linens used among the hospitals so that a proper linen rental service could be established. WHLL continued to offer its services to the city’s hospitals until 2001, when it was merged with the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority under the new name ‘WRHA Logistics Services – Laundry Operations, Winnipeg Site.’
Under the WRHA, laundry continued to operate out of HSC until 2005, when equipment failure forced the service to be moved to a new location on Inkster Street. The old HSC laundry building was then converted to what is today known as Linen Services, who work in tandem with the WRHA Laundry service to provide clean linens to the wards of HSC.
