Administrative history
The Winnipeg General Hospital was founded in 1872 by leaders from within the Winnipeg community, including Andrew Bannatyne, Andrew McDermot, the Ladies of the Province, and the community. It was incorporated on 14 May 1875 and moved to its permanent location on land west of Sherbrook Street and south of William Avenue in October of that same year. In 1973 the Winnipeg General Hospital merged with two other facilities to create the Health Sciences Centre.
Custodial history
The records of the Winnipeg General Hospital were transferred to the Archives of Manitoba in a number of accruals between 1977 and 1982. In 1998 the Health Sciences Centre asked the Nurses’ Alumni Association of the Winnipeg General Hospital/Health Sciences Centre to become custodians of the Winnipeg General Hospital materials that had not been transferred to the Provincial Archives. The Alumni Association continued to care for the records until the HSC Archivist was hired in 2010, at which point the Winnipeg General Hospital fonds was created as a separate entity.
Scope and content
The fonds contains printed and bound material including minute books, annual reports, newsletters, miscellaneous bound record books, photographs and museum artifacts.
