Biographical history

The donor's great-grandmother, Olive Harley, came to Canada in 1865 with two sons and two daughters. By 1868, Olive's husband had died and she had become responsible for raising her four children alone. In 1870, she agreed to pay a bond of $150.00/year to apprentice her son, Hugh, to an iron monger in Guelph, Ontario. Hugh eventually married and had three children. By the time the youngest was born, the family had moved to Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. Eventually, they would settle in Swan River. Hugh's youngest child, Ethel Winifred, was the donor's mother. The donor's father, Dr. George Edwin Bruce, graduated with a degree in Science from Manitoba College in 1894 and obtained his medical degree in 1901. During the summer breaks, George worked at various jobs including as a teacher at Treherne School in 1895.
