Wheat City Kennel Club was founded at an organizational meeting held on February 15, 1976. Charter members were: Joyce & Pattie Alexander of Minnedosa (Afghan Hounds,Borzoi, Whippet, Miniature Schnauzer), Sharon Dagg of Brandon (Afghan Hounds), Don Gray of Brandon (Great Dane, Smooth Fox Terrier - Valleydane Reg'd Kennel), Pete & Jo Hannam of Brandon (Afghans, Dalmatians, Salukis - Dahghani Reg'd), Mardell Leppington of Deloraine (Norwegian Elkhounds - Maylepp Reg'd), Tony & Colleen Leslie of Brandon (Rough Collies), Brent and Rhonda Mathers of Brandon (Irish Setters), Donald & Doreen McDonald of Brandon (West Highland White Terriers & Cairn Terriers), Virginia McLachlan of Brandon (Rough Collies), Barbara McLeod of Brandon (American Cocker Spaniels), Albert & Isobel Pickup of Brookdale, MB (Norwegian Elkhounds), Linda Smith of Brandon (Kerry Blue Terriers & Old English Sheepdogs), Myrtle Teichrow of Brandon (Pug), Beaty Warnett of Brandon (Rough Collies) and Earl, Betty, Sandra & Beverley Wesselman of Brandon (Cairn Terriers - Cairnwallis Reg'd). Executive in 1978 were: President-Don McDonald; Secretary-Sharon Dagg; Treasurer- yrtle Teichrow; Directors-Doreen McDonald, Albert Pickup of Carberry, Tony Leslie. The club held its first sanction match in January of that year at the Roller Rink in the Keystone Centre in Brandon, and its first CKC Sanctioned All Breed Dog Show and Obedience Trials in March, 1985 in the Kinsmen Arena in the Keystone Centre. The club has continued to hold dog shows in Brandon every year since. Since 1991, the Show Secretary has been Penny Shaw of Carberry. In 2008, the Club moved its main show to November from March, and began to collaborate with the Crocus Obedience & Kennel Club of Brando to hold a four-day show (two by Wheat City Kennel Club and two by the Crocus Club) on the new long weekend in February. In 2009, the club hired a professional Show Secretary Service (R & S Pro Services of Calgary) to manage its November 2009 shows.
