Histoire administrative

Organized to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee in 1897 by Lady Aberdeen (wife of the Governor General of Canada at the time) the V.O.N for Canada provided nursing services to districts without access to medical facilities, they also established cottage hospitals in areas too remote for patients to access medical care in the larger urban settings.

The Manitoba V.O.N initially established cottage hospitals in Shoal Lake (1899), Dauphin (1900), Swan River (1902), and Minnedosa (1908). As populations increased in Canada, public health nursing organizations and municipal hospitals were established and the V.O.N moved its model of care into towns and cities including to Winnipeg in 1905.

In the 1960's the V.O.N provided nurses for the Winnipeg General and Children’s Hospital Home Care Programs and the Children’s Hospital Not For Admission program. As time progressed the organization became involved in, or established, a variety of community nursing programs including home based palliative care, respite care, primary health care clinics, and health services in shelters for women, children and youth at risk.

The Winnipeg Regional Health Authority transitioned its entire staff to the regional authority and severed its contractual ties with the V.O.N in 2001. The Manitoba branch of the V.O.N continued as a voluntary agency but without the same influence as it had for the previous 100 years. In 2015 the V.O.N at a national level shut down all operations outside of Ontario and Nova Scotia due to lack of funding.
