Biographical history
Vera Volkova was born in St. Petersburg, Russia on June 7, 1904. After her graduation from the Imperial School of Dance in St. Petersburg, she joined the Kirov Ballet, until her defection in China in 1929. In 1942, she moved to London, England, where she opened a private dance school on West Street. During this time, she also taught at the Sadler’s Wells Ballet. She moved to Milan, Italy in 1951 to serve as ballet director at La Scala. The following year, she was offered a teaching position at the Royal Danish Ballet, where she also served briefly as co-artistic director. She was decorated by the King of Denmark in 1956.
Her first contact with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet was when Arnold Spohr invited her to teach at the Banff School of Fine Arts and arranged for fifteen members of the RWB to attend her classes. She came to Winnipeg as a guest teacher with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet from June 21 to July 3, 1971. Vera Volkova passed away in Copenhagen May 5, 1975.
