Biographical history

Velma Ursula (Harburn) (McDonald) Daws (1926-) was a teacher in various Manitoba schools. She was born in Brookdale, Manitoba to Annie ([19-?]-1970) and John Harburn (1868-1935). She married Neil McDonald of Castle Point, Manitoba and they had son Bruce. In 1971 she married Reg Daws. They lived in many Canadian places before retiring to Yarrow, British Columbia. Daws taught school and nursed in Inuvik, Northwest Territories for many years. She had taken all her education at Brookdale School, followed by teacher training. Daws later studied tailoring, stenography, and before graduating as a Registered Nurse from Grace Hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Custodial history

Records have been presented to the Carberry Plains Archives in 1991 and 1997 by Velma Daws of Chilliwack, British Columbia.

Scope and content

Fonds consists of a teacher's certificate (1949), Manitoba Normal School year book (1949), correspondence, exercise book of Nellie Harburn's, teacher's agreements, Grace Hospital School of Nursing diploma (1959), and miscellaneous material. Black and white photographs of Castle Hill School, water tower, General Store (all 1945), Summerville School students (1946-1947).
