Biographical history

Vanessa Lawson was born in Edmonton, Alberta and began her dance training at the Edmonton School of Ballet. She also attended summer schools at the National Ballet of Canada and the International Ballet in Jackson, Mississippi. She entered the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School Professional Division in 1994 and graduated with distinction in 1996. She joined the Royal Winnipeg Ballet as an Apprentice in 1997. The following year, she became a member of the corps de ballet and was promoted to Soloist in 2002. She was a principal dancer from 2006 until her retirement in 2013. While continuing to dance with the RWB, in 2012 she began working with the artistic team of the RWB and Q Dance. She traveled to Havana, Cuba in 2012 to set Peter Quanz’s ballet Luminous on the Cuban National Ballet Company. Since 2014, she has served as a Ballet Master with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet.

Custodial history

The records of Vanessa Lawson came to the Royal Winnipeg Ballet as part of a transfer of records from the RWB and were also collected by members of the Alumni Association.

The Vanessa Lawson fonds includes the following series: biographical information (1997-2006); newspaper and magazine articles (2001-2014); Honourary Chair for Friends of the RWB (2009-2013);photographs (2001-2008); radio interview transcript (2003); and review quotes (1998-2002) .
