Administrative history

The University of Winnipeg Library was a successor to the Library of United College, and began operations in 1967. The University of Winnipeg Library provides space and resources for students, faculty, and community members to pursue their academic goals. The Library aims to support academic excellence, student diversity and access, and provide an outstanding student experience. The Library houses hundreds of thousands of books and articles, and provides access to many more online through its catalogue. The current incarnation of the University of Winnipeg Library, informally known as the "Library in the Sky", moved into its current location on the fourth and fifth floors of Centennial Hall in 1974.

Custodial history

The collection was created by the University of Winnipeg Library on July 25, 2016, when the initial web crawls of the collection occurred. Additional crawls were performed on September 9th and 16th of the same year, whereby new captures were added to the collection. Archived websites are added to the collection periodically. The Library staff directly involved in curating the collection include the University Archivist/Digital Curator, the Head of Systems, as well as a student archives assistant, who worked throughout the summer of 2016.

Scope and content

The Truth and Reconciliation Web Collection consists of 285 archived websites pertaining to Manitoba’s ongoing involvement in the reconciliation process as defined by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. The collection content pertains to a diverse range of topics, including Survivors’ stories, apologies, responses, cultural events, and more. The media captured in the collection includes web pages, blogs, news coverage, and PDF files. The collection will continue to grow as Manitoba witnesses new forms of reconciliation. The collection is curated using the University of Winnipeg’s subscription to the Internet Archive service Archive-It. Captures of archived websites are created using the Internet Archive’s Heritrix and Wayback Machine tools. All captures of the archived web sites are hosted on Internet Archive servers.
