Biographical history

The subjects of the photographs in this collection are members of the family of Mr. T.J. Lockhart of Winnipeg. The majority are Mr. Lockhart's Gillanders relatives (the family of Mr. Lockhart's maternal grandparents) who came to Canada from Maryburgh, near Inverness, Scotland in the early 1880's. Also included are a number of photographs of Lockhart relatives.

Custodial history

The photographs were donated to the Dugald Costume Museum by Mrs. T.J. (Helen) Lockhart in 1987.

Scope and content

The holding consists of a Cartes de Visites album containing 12 photographs which date from ca.1865-1885. The subjects of the Cartes are adults, adolescents and children and they are identified as Gillanders relatives. Also included with this holding is a collection of 14 loose Cartes de Visites (designated C13) and larger studio photographs dating from ca.1870-1918. Subjects include individuals, couples and groups of all ages. Many are identified as Lockharts and Gillanders. One is a group photograph identified as Maryburgh School.

The holding consists of a small Cartes de Visites album measuring 11 x 13.8 cm (designated A7) and containing 7 leaves with decorative openings for 14 carte de visites photographs, of which 12 contained photographs, and a title page.The cover is missing but the title page survives and carries the inscription 'Jessie Gillanders. Maryburgh. June 26, 1883'. The fourteen photographs not in an album include Cartes de Visites, Cabinet Cards and larger studio formats.
