Stephen Emmett Clement (1867-1947)
Stephen Emmett Clement Jr. was born October 14, 1867 at Cookstown, Simcoe County , Ontario to Stephen Clement and Eleanor Dixon. He came to Brandon, Manitoba in 1882 with his family. He completed his education at Brandon Collegiate Institute and Wesley College in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He studied law with Clifford Sifton and J.A.M.Aikins. He was called to the Manitoba Bar in 1895. He established a law practice in Brandon in partnership with his brother Robert A. Clement. On August 30, 1899 he married Aleta Elizabeth Paisley. They had four children: Harold Dixon Clement, Ethel Ruth Clement, Robert James Clement and David William Clement.
Stephen E. Clement served two years as a Brandon City Alderman and six years as a trustee on the Brandon School Board. He was Mayor of Brandon from 1907 to 1908. He was a representative of the Council of Bar Associations for the Western Judicial District, a bencher for the Law Society of Manitoba and a Director of the Brandon General Hospital. He served as a director of the Provincial Exhibition and the Manitoba Winter Fair, a director of Wesley College, and a trustee of First United Church.
In 1914, he unsuccessfully ran for public office against G.R. Coldwell for the Brandon City constituency in the Manitoba Legislature. In 1915 he defeated James Aikins, Leader of the Conservative Party and served one term. Stephen E. Clement served as a county court judge from 1927 to 1944. Stephen Emmett Clement died in Brandon, Manitoba on December 31, 1947. He is buried in Brandon Municipal Cemetery.
