Administrative history

Until 1950, residents of the village of Oakburn attended Our Lady of Assumption Church six miles from the village. In 1946, a Mrs. Cumming from Montreal donated $1500 towards construction of a chapel in the village. In 1948 there were nine families residing in the village. By 1950, St. Catherine's Chapel was completed. Sacramental records begin in 1939. As early as 1962, tthe possible amalgamation of St. Catherine and Our Lady of Assumption Churches was considered. St. Catherine's was closed by the Archbishop in 1981, although it was not canonically closed until 1998, at which time any property was placed under the care of St. Joseph the Worker Parish in Russell.
