Biographical history

Spearhill United Church existed in the Manitoba community of Spearhill, located north of Ashern in the Rural Municipality of Grahamdale, from 1940 to 1968. In 1925, Mr. Hamilton, a student minister, came twice a month to hold services in the Scandia School. These services were later moved to the Community Hall. Spearhill first appears in the records when it joins the Ashern Pastoral charge in 1929. The land on which the local Lutheran Church had previously stood before being destroyed by fire was donated to The United Church of Canada. The Blairmore School building, located five miles north of Spearhill, was bought and moved onto the foundation of the former Lutheran church. The building was ready for use and dedicated as Spearhill United Church in 1940. It joined the Northwest Interlake Pastoral charge when it was formed in 1954. After 1961, the church fell into disuse, and in August of 1968 the pulpit chair and communion table were transferred to Steep Rock Community Church. Spearhill did, however continue to be a preaching point of the Northwest Interlake Pastoral charge until 1972.

Custodial history

The records of Spearhill United Church came to The United Church of Canada Archives-Conference of Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario as part of a transfer of records from the Northwest Interlake Pastoral charge in April of 1981.

Scope and content

The records of Spearhill United Church held at the conference archives include: a Communion Roll (1955-1961); records of the Trustees (1936-1942, 1951, 1962); and records of the Ladies Aid (1960-1965).
