Biographical history
Shelley was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba and began taking dance lessons at the age of seven. She entered the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School at age thirteen, and was offered a scholarship at its Professional Division in 1972, when she was fifteen. Shelley joined the Royal Winnipeg Ballet as a member of the corps de ballet in 1976, but injuries caused her to retire from dancing after the first season. She returned to school to finish high school and then earned an honours commerce degree from the University of Manitoba. After graduation, she served as a systems engineer for IBM for four years. She opened up the Shelley Shearer School of Dance in the summer of 1986, and is still serving as its Director.
