Administrative history
Shaaarey Zedek is a Conservative synagogue in Winnipeg, Manitoba established in 1890.
Members of the synagogues Beth El and Beth Israel sought to establish a new synagogue and construction began on a new building in 1890 at King and Henry Streets. The first clergyman also served as secretary and building caretaker.
In 1894 the congregation purchased land for a cemetery that opened on Main Street in 1896.
Shortly after opening, Orthodox members of the congregation left to form Beth Israel a short distance away. In 1903, liberal members formed their own congregation, Holy Blossom Temple (the name was soon changed to Shaarey Shomayim). In 1914 Shaarey Shomayim merged with Shaarey Zedek and the congregation moved to the Shaarey Shomayim building on Dagmar Street. The congregation moved to its current location at Wellington and Academy in 1950.
The Shaarey Zedek Sisterhood was formed in 1920 after several other groups merged. The Junior Congregation was formed 1950, it was renamed the Junior Youth Organization and later United Synagogue Youth.
In 1956 the synagogue opened the Ramah day school, which would later merge with the other Jewish day schools in Winnipeg.
The synagogue is managed by a board elected by members. The board consists of the President, Past President, Chairs of the Cemetery Committee and the Investment Committee, a representative from the Brotherhood and the Sisterhood and twenty additional members. The Executive Committee consists of the President, Vice-President, Treasurer, Past President, Chair of the Cemetery Committee and two additional Directors and supervises the Senior Rabbi and Executive Director, in addition to other responsibilities.
The standing committees of the congregation consist of the Catering Committee, Cemetery Committee, Education and Programming Committee, Finance Committee, House and Building Committee, Investment Committee, Membership Committee, Ritual Committee, Special Gifts Committee and Youth Committee. A Nominating Committee is also created when elections for board members are due.
