Senator John Nesbitt Kirchhoffer (1848-1914) was born in Ireland and moved to Ontario in 1864 where he worked as a lawyer. He came to Manitoba in 1883 where he became involved in politics, founding the Plum Creek Settlement and the town of Souris. Kirchhoffer served in many different political roles including Reeve of the Rural Municipality of Glenwood, mayor of Souris, as a member of the Western Judicial District Board, and as the West Brandon representative in the Manitoba Legislature. He was appointed to the senate in in 1892, serving as a senator in Brandon until his death in 1914.
