Administrative history

The Royal Winnipeg Ballet Alumni Association was founded in 1989, following the 50th Anniversary of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet (RWB). The founding members were Margaret (Hample) Piasecki, Arnold Spohr, Marilyn (Young) Marshall, Catherine White, Nenad Lhotka, Leslie Carter and Susan Bennet.
The objectives of the Alumni Association set out by the founding members were to stay in touch with former members of the RWB, build camaraderie amongst its members, support the RWB Company and its professional school and preserve the company’s heritage through the development of an archives project.
In March 1991 the Alumni Association adopted its first Constitution. Membership is open to anyone who was a salaried employee of the RWB. Friends of the Alumni may also join as Associate Members.
To stay in touch with its members and foster collegiality, the Alumni Association started publication of a newsletter in 1990 and in 1992 published its first Directory.
Work on the archives began soon after the Alumni Association’s founding. By 1991, the Alumni Association was requesting space from the RWB to house the archival collection. In 2010, the RWB Board of Directors took over the stewardship of the archives and staff and supplies funding began to be provided by the Company. In 2017, the archivist was made a permanent, salaried member of the RWB staff.
Some of their other projects initiated by the RWB Alumni Association have included providing guides to allow visitors to tour the RWB School building, setting up many displays in the building to showcase the history of the RWB to staff, students and visitors, displaying RWB posters within the building and funding annual scholarships to deserving Professional Division students. During significant anniversaries for the RWB, the Alumni Association also hosted various reunion activities for its members. Due to declining membership, the Alumni Association moved to disband on February 1, 2021. The Development Department at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet became the custodian of the alumni database.
