Name of creator
Roger Shim was born in Trinidad and began his dance training at the age of ten at the Caribbean School of Dance in Port of Spain. He moved to Canada in 1968 and earned a Physics degree at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Ontario before continuing his dance training as a scholarship student at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. He also received scholarships to study at Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, the Banff Summer School, as well as in New York. He joined the Royal Winnipeg Ballet as a member of the corps de ballet in 1972 and was promoted to soloist in 1974. He became a Principal Dancer in 1977. He left in 1979 to dance with the Grand Théâtre de Genève in Switzerland. After his retirement from dancing, he became a clothing designer with the company Boutique Tendrances. He has designed costumes for several ballet productions, and still lives in Geneva, Switzerland.
The records of Roger Shim came to the Royal Winnipeg Ballet Archives as part of a transfer of records from the RWB and from Roger Shim.
