Robert Rae ( 1843-1926) was born in Scotland on October 30, 1843. His father, mother and thirteen of their sixteen children settled in Ontario, Canada in 1874. In 1879, Robert worked building the Canadian Pacific Railroad as far as Winnipeg, Manitoba. He then homesteaded the NE 1/4 of 6-11-17 in the R.M. of Elton, Manitoba. He returned to Ontario to marry Rosanna McDuff (1842-1927) on March 4, 1884. In 1891 Robert and Rosanna adopted four of her nieces and nephews: Rosabella Hicks Rae, Harvey McDuff Hick Rae, Blanche Hicks Rae, and Archie Hicks Rae. Robert and Rosanna Rae rented out their farm and moved to Brandon in 1904. Robert died in 1926 and Rosanna in 1927.
