Biographical history
Richard Gibbs was born in Des Moines, Iowa. He studied music, jazz dance and did summer stock before beginning his ballet training with the Joffrey Ballet. He then joined the Royal Winnipeg Ballet as a scholarship student and in 1972 became a member of the corps de ballet. In 1974, he joined the Hamburg Ballet in Germany, where he spent four years before returning to North America to perform with the First Chamber Dance Company as a Principal Dancer. After his retirement he received his medical degree at Yale University and has been the Supervising Physician for the San Francisco Ballet since 1990 while teaching at the San Francisco Ballet and the Marin Ballet. He founded the Allegro Theater Company in 1998 and received the Dean Goodman Award for his choreographic work entitled Pal Joey in 1999.
Custodial history
The records of Richard Gibbs came to the Royal Winnipeg Ballet archives as part of a transfer of records from the RWB and were also collected by the Alumni Association.
