Biographical history

The Rev. Arthur N. Thompson was a graduate of Trinity and Wycliffe Colleges and the University of Toronto. He was ordained a Deacon in 1954 and a Priest in 1955. He served as Protestant Chaplain with the Distant Early Warning Line and the Canadian Arctic, and was the Director of Missionary Education, as well as a reserve naval officer and chaplain. He served as the Rector of St. John's Church in Kingston, Ontario from 1964 to 1969 and the Rector of St. George's Crescentwood, Winnipeg (W.019) from 1969 to 1983. He became an Honorary Assistant at St. Bartholomew's Church, Winnipeg (W.013) in 1985 and held that position for one year. He served at St. Philip's Church, Winnipeg (W.037) from 1990 to 1995. He was a Canon of St. John's Cathedral from 1974 to 1994 and an Honorary Canon from 1994 to 2000 as well as being an Assistant to the Bishop from 1986 to1988. He received an honorary D.D. of the University of Emmanuel College, Saskatoon. After his retirement, he had short terms as Honorary Assistant at St. Luke's Church, Winnipeg (W.026) and St. Chad's Church, Winnipeg (W.015). The Rev. Arthur N. Thompson died on March 26, 2004.

The records of The Rev. Arthur N. Thompson came to the Diocesan archives as part of several transfers of records in 1991; 1997; 2004; and 2006.

Scope and content

The records of The Rev. Arthur N. Thompson held at the Diocese of Rupert's Land archives include an article entitled, "The History and Theology of Christian Mission to The Indians in The Red River Settlement from 1820 – 1865".
