Biographical history
Peter Quanz was born in Baden, Ontario and began his ballet training at the Academy of Dance in Waterloo, Ontario. He then attended the Banff Centre for the Arts in 1996 before being accepted into the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School, where he began his choreographic career. As a student in 1999, he received the first Judy and Henny Jurriens Choreographic Fellowship, which allowed him to study choreography in Europe. He danced briefly with the Dutch National Ballet and the Stuttgart Ballet. From 2000-2002, he worked as a volunteer with the Stuttgart Ballet to gain more choreographic experience after participating in the Noverre Society’s Young Choreographer’s Evening.
In 2002, he was invited by the New York Choreographic Institute to choreograph a short work for the New York City Ballet. In 2005, he received the Clifford E. Lee Award for young choreographers. Two years later, he was the first Canadian choreographer to create a ballet for the Kirov Ballet. He returned to the Royal Winnipeg Ballet in 2009 to choreograph Quantz by Quanz. That same year, he began his own dance company named Q Dance, which uses some of the dancers from the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. In 2013 Q-Dance performances began to be included in the RWB’s season. In Tandem is the other ballet choreographed by Peter Quanz that is now in the repertoire of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet.
