Administrative history

The Peter Pan Club was established in May of 1977 by Beth Phillips and Pat Scorer as a volunteer organization to meet the needs of patients, parents and staff not covered by the Winnipeg Children’s Hospital’s budget by encouraging voluntary support through gifts, time or funds. Through charity events, public outreach and grants the Club was able to collect funding for programs, equipment, toys, furnishings and general comforts for both patients and parents at the WCH and Children’s Burn Ward. Eventually, the Club decided to include educational efforts to prevent the hospitalization of children through such programs as the Firefighters’ S.A.F.E. Baby program. Volunteer efforts were expanded to include such tasks as escorting patients / parents to various places within the Hospital, babysitting and tending to babies and children and conducting tours. The Club dissolved in 2010.

Custodial history

Various records from The Peter Pan Club were initially donated by Marie-Alice Grassick, Co-ordinator of Volunteers for HSC, directly to the Archives, containing records created or collected by Grassick and other members of the Club. The collection was stored in basement storage space until 2012 when other records, which had been transferred to the Children’s Hospital Archives Group around 2009, were transferred to the Archives and the accession completed.

Scope and content

The fond contains records pertaining to the administrative and charitable activities of The Peter Pan Club. The administrative records include minutes, lists of members and volunteers, annual reports, financial reports, guidelines, general information about the Club and photographs of members. Donations, requested and received, encompassed a large part of the organization.
Such records relating to donations include documentation of donations made to and from The Peter Pan Club, requests for funding, wish lists, grants and photographs of donated items and cheque ceremonies. The Club also initiated events and programs to aid with fundraising for the Children’s Hospital and the Children’s Burn Ward and their patients and families. These consist of textual and photographic records of hospital tours and orientations, the Burn Discharge Book Project, Chi-Chi’s Charity Fiesta and the Wishing Wells / collection boxes. Other records consist of miscellaneous ephemera including newspaper clippings, awards and certificates and a cookbook. Artefacts include embroidered badges, plaques, signs, pins and posters.
