Biographical history

Gertrude Irene Parsons was born in 1916. She was the daughter of Dr. W. Roy Parsons. She became a student at United College in 1932. She was the recipient of the Principal J.W. Sparling Scholarship in 1933, the J.B. Ashdown Scholarship in 1934 and the Sir John C. Eaton Scholarship in 1935. In that same year she was awarded the Lieutenant Governor’s medal. She graduated in 1936 with a Bachelor of Arts with Honours. She married her husband Eric Otto Wolfred Hehner in 1944. She had four children. She died in 2006 at the age of 89.

Custodial history

Material was originally accumulated by Gertrude Hehner (nee Parsons) before passing into the custody of her daughter, Patricia Hehner, who donated the material to the University Archives in 2017.

Scope and content

Records documenting Gertrude Hehner (nee Parsons)’s time at United College including scholarship and medal certificates; Vox yearbooks, 1932-33 and 1936; United College class photographs of female graduates; a newsclipping; a 1933-1934 Lieutenant Governor’s medal; three United College/University of Winnipeg pins; the 1988 UW Commemorative Journal; and the 1992 Alumni Directory.

Physical condition

Pins are in plastic wrappers; medal is in a small blue medal case, the medal is gold with tarnish at the top.

Arranged into three folders, one containing personal objects and artifacts, one containing yearbooks and award certificates, and the third containing textual material from 1988-1992, as well as pins and a medal in a medal case.
