Biographical history

The Pas, Manitoba, is located directly north of Swan River, northwest of Cedar Lake, and is considered a northern community. Travelling missionaries had visited the area as early as the 1840s. The first permanent congregation in the community, however, was organised by the Methodists in 1913. They met in the Dreamland Theatre until a fire forced them to move to the Hudson Block. In 1915, this congregation disbanded and Westminster Presbyterian Church opened soon after. This became Westminster United Church in 1925. In 1950, the congregation moved to the Masonic Hall until a new building was dedicated in 1953. The Pas was originally part of Dauphin Presbytery, moving to Hudson Bay Presbytery in 1929, and then becoming part of Northland Presbytery when Dauphin and Hudson Bay were amalgamated to from Northland in 1966.

Custodial history

The records of The Pas Pstoral Charge came to The United Church of Canada Archives-Conference of Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario as part of several transfers of records from the charge between 1985 and 1994. A manse fire in 1932 destroyed many church records and few survive from prior to that date.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of the surviving records created by the congregation of Wesminster United Church arranged in the following series: Sacramental Registers, 1932-1978; Membership Rolls and records of the Session, 1924-1973; records of the Official board and its standing Committees, 1925-1992; records of Annual meetings of the Congregation and Annual Reports, 1961-1994; records of the Board of Stewards and church property, 1947-1971; and records of Lay Associations, 1924-1982.
