Administrative history

The Northern Manitoba Trappers’ Festival is a winter festival and dog sled races held annually in February in The Pas. It is the oldest winter festival in western Canada, having its roots in the Hudson Bay Dog Derby that was held from 1916 until the 1930s, with the first modern-day Northern Manitoba Trappers’ Festival being held in 1948. The festival celebrates the heritage and culture of the North, drawing on the activities undertaken by trappers including dog sled mushing, sawing and chopping, hunting and fishing, building fires and snowshoeing. The Trappers’ Festival showcases these skills in friendly competition, as well as a variety of other seasonal and social activities, which evolved from impromptu competitions in conjunction with dog sled races.
