Biographical history

Established as the North Cypress Junior Farmers Association in their constitution dated December 8, 1961, the group actually began operations in December,1956 with discussion concerning formalizing as a Junior Farmers Association. Later, a Ladies Auxiliary was added (ca 1961). Active members through the years included Lester Baron, Bill Burch, Vern Caithness, Ron Calvert, Don Craig, Bob Drysdale, Elroy Fisher, D Foster, Don Fraser, Ken Fraser, Walter Froom, Ken Hay, Barry Hood, Wallace Hood, Don Hotel, Reed Jones, Rud Jones, Rob Loney, Dan Mack, Ron Manns, James May, Don Meadows, Leslie Meadows, Barry Mikkelsen, Ken Mitchell, Bev Nicholson, Jim North, Allan Olmstead, Bert Olmstead, Ivan Olmstead, Joan Olmstead, Neil Olmstead, Allan Olstead, Glen Rogers, Charles Simpson, Ronald Simpson, Welland Stonehouse, Charles Swanson, Hector Swanson, Keith Thiessen, Keith Thompson, Douglas Tolton, Glen Tolton, Fred Watts, Alex Wells and Ted Whitmore. The group undertook various activities including educational projects such as courses in welding and farming practices, and some social activities. At a later date, the group's name was changed to the North Cypress Rural Improvement Association. The early secretaries of the Association were: Charles Swanson (1956-58), Barry Hood (19958-59) and Don Fraser (1960-62).

Custodial history

Records have been presented to the Carberry Plains Archives in 2010 by Peggy Hood, wife of Barry Hood, one of the original members.

Scope and content

Fonds consists of correspondence (1957-1965), minutes and account statements (1957-1964), some annual reports, 1961 constitution, a file containing documents about the history of the Junior Farmers' Association of Ontario, documents concerning a 1991 Reunion, photographs, and financial records.
