Nellie Evelyne (Harburn) Stein (1916-1969) was a nurse who photographed her life and work during World War II. She was born at Brookdale, Manitoba in 1916 to Annie and John Harburn, and had 8 siblings: Jennie, Viola, Myrtle, Velma, Joan, Albert, Chester, and Foster. She died in Vancouver, British Columbia. Harburn married Leonard P. Stein in 1947, and moved to Rosetown, Saskatchewan. She later was the head therapy technician at the Cancer Clinic in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. In 1949 she became an X-ray therapist with the BC Cancer Institute later retiring to Vancouver, British Columbia. Stein had received her formal education at Brookdale Public School, graduating from Brandon General Hospital School of Nursing in 1938, the year she became a member of the Manitoba Association of Registered Nurses. After a year of private nursing, Stein enlisted in the Canadian Army in 1939. In 1940 she was transferred to England were she served in hospitals in England until 1944. On July 18, 1944 Stein embarked for duty in France with the First Canadian Armoured Carrier Regiment with whom she served until 1945. She was honourably discharged from the Canadian Army Active Force in that year. Stein was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp in 1944.

Velma Ursula (Harburn) (McDonald) Daws (1926-) was a teacher in various Manitoba schools. She was born in Brookdale, Manitoba to Annie ([19-?]-1970) and John Harburn (1868-1935). She married Neil McDonald of Castle Point, Manitoba and they had son Bruce. In 1971 she married Reg Daws. They lived in many Canadian places before retiring to Yarrow, British Columbia. Daws taught school and nursed in Inuvik, Northwest Territories for many years. She had taken all her education at Brookdale School, followed by teacher training. Daws later studied tailoring, stenography, and before graduating as a Registered Nurse from Grace Hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Records were presented to the Carberry Plains Museum by Velma Daws of Chilliwack, B. C. in 1990 which transferred them to the Carberry Plains Archives in 1990.

Portée et contenu

Fonds consists of correspondence, certificates of professional registration, personal journal (1944) and other documents, military records, biographical sketches. Photographs (155 black and white photographs, 110 black and white negatives) show nurses and soldiers, views of England, France and the Royal Family.
