Biographical history
Neal Kayan was born in Chicago, Illinois and began his professional career as a pianist at the age of sixteen playing for ballet classes. He later studied arranging, composing, orchestration and musical direction as well. He was a vocal coach for the Lyric Opera of Chicago and for the National Music Camp in Interlochen, Michigan. He has served as chorus master and associate conductor for both the Kansas City Starlight Theatre and the St. Louis Municipal Opera. He has also been the musical director for summer productions of musicals such as My Fair Lady, Showboat, South Pacific and West Side Story. He was the principal conductor for The Nutcracker production. He served as a piano soloist and conductor with the American Ballet Theatre and also performed with the Harkness Ballet. He became the musical director of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet in 1971. He returned to New York in 1979. Neal Kayan passed away on June 18, 1986 in New York, New York.
