History

The Mother's Union is a world-wide organization which focuses on family life, prayer and service. The first Canadian Branch was started in London, Ontario by a Mrs. Boomer in September of 1888 at Cronyn Memorial Church. The first Branch in Western Canada was formed in Winnipeg by Mrs. A.C. Frith in September of 1905 at All Saints Church. Mrs. C.C. Chipman was appointed Enrolling Member and Mrs. Firth was the Secretary Treasurer. Mrs. Chipman would later become the first Diocesan President. The first Diocesan meeting was held Nov. 5, 1909. By 1910 there were 10 branches of the Mother's Union in Winnipeg. The Treasurer became a separate officer in 1913. A Central Council for Canada headquartered in Winnipeg, to be known as the Canadian Dominion Council, was proposed in 1914. When the new council was eventually established in 1926, Mrs. S.P. Matheson was elected the first president. Mrs. Philip Jomini became Secretary in 1928. The Canadian Dominion Council headquarters moved to Toronto in 1935. By 2000, only St. James the Assiniboine (W.022) and St. Stephen's (W.039) churches had an active Mother's Union group.
