Biographical history

According to The Manual of The United Church of Canada a Session is required for each Pastoral Charge. The duties of the Session include the admission of persons into membership; the conduct of members; the administration of sacraments; the religious training of the young and the organisation of meetings for Christian Fellowship; the Order of public worship and the use of the church; the care of the poor and visiting the sick; to receive and judge petitions; to recommend lay members for licensing as lay preachers; to recommend suitable Candidates for Ministry; and to keep the Roll and Registers. Members of the Session are chosen from among the full members of the Congregation by election, usually for a term of not less than five years. The Session of antecedent congregations would have had similar responsibilities.
