History

W.A. McLeod came to Rat Portage as an employee of the C.P.R. in 1882. However, by 1884 he had entered the shoe business. The business was operated in several locations. In 1895, the store was located on Second Street. By 1900, it had become part of Gardner Rice and McLeod General Store. Between 1902 and 1912, the shoe business was suspended and Mr. McLeod was involved in an insurance enterprise. In 1912, the shoe business was reopened in the McLeod Block on Main Street. W.A. McLeod's son, William McLeod went into business with his father when he returned from Service overseas after WW I. Both McLeod's were active in the civic affairs of the Lake of the Woods district.
