Biographical history

Lillian Mary Shepherd was born in Beulah, Manitoba to William James and Lillian Margaret Shepherd in 1907. She received her schooling in rural Manitoba and graduated from Winnipeg General Hospital School of Nursing in 1928. Soon after graduation she began working at the Winnipeg Municipal Hospitals (later Riverview Health Centre) and in 1937 became charge nurses. From 1946, until her retirement in 1968, she was the Director of Nursing. Throughout her career she published a number of articles and books including a history of the Municipal Hospitals “Our Hospitals Through the Years”. She passed away in 1994

The records of Mary Shepherd were collected by the Nurses Alumni Association of the Winnipeg General Hospital and Health Sciences Centre.

The collection reflects Mary Shepherds career at Winnipeg Municipal Hospitals and includes articles written by her and about her as well as various objects used by her.
