Historical Background: Mary Ellen Birtles was born January 24, 1859 at Yorkshire England to Joseph Birtles Sr. (1824-1859) and Hephzibah Milnes (1823-1908). She immigrated to the Alexander, Manitoba from Sheffield England with her parents and siblings in 1883. In 1886, she began working in the Winnipeg General Hospital where she received her nursing training from 1887 to 1889. Mary Ellen Birtles' nursing career took her to many new hospitals in the Canadian West. She nursed at the Medicine Hat General Hospital in Medicine Hat, Alberta (1890-1892); the Brandon General Hospital in Brandon, Manitoba (1892-1894 and 1898-1919); and the Calgary General Hospital in Calgary, Alberta (1894-1898). She was awarded the Order of the British Empire for her nursing service in 1935. Mary Ellen Birtles passed away in Alexander, Manitoba in 1943.
