Biographical history

Laird Rankin is a Winnipeg resident. Rankin has a Bachelor of Arts degree (1962) and a Bachelor of Commerce degree (1964) from the University of Manitoba. He worked in the head office at the Hudson’s Bay Company (1967-1974). Since then, he has worked in the non-profit sector with the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce, as President of the University of Manitoba’s Alumni Association (1975-1994), as founding Executive Director of Canada's National History Society and publisher of it's magazine The Beaver, now known as Canada's History (1994-2001). He is a published journalist and author of several books.

Custodial history

The fonds was donated by Laird Rankin to University of Manitoba Archives & Special Collections in 2013.

Scope and content

This fonds consists of research materials and drafts for two publications by Rankin: "Open for Business: The History of Business Education at the University of Manitoba," and "Assessing the Risk: The History of the Actuarial Program at the University of Manitoba".

Partial copies of University of Manitoba Course Calendars for the years 1909-1958 were removed as the University of Manitoba Archives & Special Collections holds a complete collection of the Course Calendars. Partial copies of University of Manitoba Board of Governors minutes for the years 1921-1924 were removed as the University of Manitoba Archives & Special Collections holds the complete set of the minutes.
