Biographical history

Margaret Morse was born in Shelburne, Nova Scotia in 1887 and moved to Ottawa, Ontario as a child, where she began an acting career. She married Charles Tupper in 1910, who was later knighted, and moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba. She became involved in the Winnipeg Little Theatre as a performer and director and founded the Winnipeg Player’s Guild and helped to found the Dominion Drama Festival. In 1949, she was responsible for the incorporation of the Winnipeg Ballet, and selected the first members of the Board and Women’s Committee. She is also credited with the Winnipeg Ballet getting its Royal designation in 1953. She served on the Board of Directors from 1949 to 1957, and also served on the Women’s Committee as the president beginning in 1950. Lady Margaret Tupper passed away March 1, 1971 in Winnipeg.

Custodial history

The records of Lady Margaret Tupper came to the Royal Winnipeg Ballet Archives as part of several transfers of records from the RWB.
