Name of creator

Biographical history

Joseph Paynter ([1849]-[after 1919]) photographed events, sites, and people in the Carb, Manitoba area between approximately 1897 and 1919. He was born at Owen Sound, [Ontario] and died in an unknown place. He moved to Manitoba with a party of family and friends in 1879 when he applied for a homestead on NW1/4 31-14-26 (patented 1884). He later opened a photography studio in Carberry, and his nephew Will took over the farm. The studio was sold in circa 1918. A niece, Mary Gertrude Paynter, spent a year circa 1900 in his photography business. Further biographical information is unknown.

Custodial history

Records have been presented to the Carberry Plains Archives in 1988 by the Carberry Plains Museum which had received material from the Bank of Montreal on an unknown date. The 1988.218 accession was donated by Sylois J. McKay of an unknown place. 1988.253 was presented by Mrs. and Mr. Bob Revire of an unknown place. The 1996.13 accession was transferred by the Margaret Lawrence Museum in Neepawa, Manitoba which received it from a resident of Outlook, Saskatchewan.

Scope and content

Fonds consists of black and white photographs of farm houses in the Wellwood, Castle Point, Fairview, Stinson, Petrel, and Carberry areas. Au verso of each photograph, the house owners have been identified. The 1988.218 accession shows a threshing outfit taken prior to 1910 and has Orville McKay written au verso. The 1988.252 accession shows unknown families. The 1988.253 accession shows the Intermediate Hockey Club (1906). The 1996.13 accession shows Matthew Wise (1847-1913).
