Historical Background: Joseph Birtles was born February 11, 1824 in Lancashire, England. He married Hephzibah Milnes (1823-1908) on August 14, 1848 in Yorkshire, England. They had six children: Sarah (1851-1921), Joseph (1853-1932), Edith Ann (1885-1916), Mary Ellen (1858-1943), Martha (1860-1907) and Arthur (1866-1951). Joseph Birtles, Sr. was employed as a schoolmaster at Endowed Church of England School in Norton Yorkshire between 1865 and 1883. He retired from teaching and moved the family to Canada in 1883 where he began farming in the Alexander, Manitoba area. He passed away on March 7, 1908 in Alexander.
