Notice biographique

Joost Pelt was born in Amsterdam and began his dance training at the age of fifteen and trained at the Rotterdam’s Ballet Academy. He joined the Netherlands Dance Theatre in 1970. He left the company for a year to dance with the Ballet of Flanders in Belgium and Bejart’s Ballet of the 20th Century in Denmark. He married Marilyn Lewis in 1976 after he returned to The Netherlands. They moved to Canada in 1977 and Joost joined the Royal Winnipeg Ballet as a member of the corps de ballet. He was promoted to soloist the following year and became a Principal Dancer in 1979.
After his departure in 1981, he spent less than one year at Winnipeg’s Contemporary Dancers before establishing Dance 160, a dance studio associated with the Prairie Theatre Exchange. He also choreographed for Dance Discovery, taught jazz dance at the Royal Conservatory of Dance and coached figure skating. In 1983, Dance 160 expanded to become the Manitoba Dance Theatre and School Inc. and Joost became its Director. From 1987 to 1992, he was the Dance Programmer for the Harbourfront Centre in Toronto. In 1990, he established Black Tulip, a Business Administration and Personal Assistance company and has served as its Executive Director since 1995.
