He initially studied tap and ballroom dancing, but was introduced to ballet after becoming a National Champion Ballroom Dancer. He studied at the Banff School of Fine Arts for five summers and was also a student at the Alberta School of Ballet and soon was performing as an apprentice and eventually a member of the Alberta Ballet. In 1976, he entered the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School Professional Division. He joined the Royal Winnipeg Ballet as a member of the corps de ballet in 1978, and was promoted to Soloist in 1980 and became a Principal Dancer in 1985.
