History

Anver Bey Abdullah Jaffa Khan was born December 24, 1930 in Seattle Washington. He trained in Seattle, Los Angeles, California, and New York. After participating in a Concert of Solo Competitions in Seattle, he danced with the Ballet de Paris from 1949 to 1950. He was a member of May O’Donnell’s Modern Dance Company at the same time. In 1953, he left the Modern Dance Company and began The Joffrey Ballet School, previously known as The American Ballet Center. Three years later, he also founded The Joffrey Ballet. He was a Faculty member of the New York City High School of the Performing Arts from 1950 to 1955 and the Cornish Institute in Seattle. He founded the Joffrey Workshop and was its Director from 1973 to 1988.
Robert began his choreographic career with the ballets Scaramouche and Persephone in 1952. He originally choreographed primarily for his own ballet company and the New York City Opera, but many other companies and events have used his choreography, including the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, who performed Pas de Déeses in 1995. He received an Honorary Doctorate from Pacific Lutheran University in 1978 and from the Cornish Institute in 1979. He was elected to the Washington State Centennial Hall of Honour in 1988.
