Biographical history

Jean Saunders Paterson was born in Glasgow, Scotland in about 1902, the daughter of Marion Brown and William Paterson, and immigrated to Canada with her family at around the same time. She graduated from the Children’s Hospital School of Nursing in 1924 and moved to Kenora General Hospital where she worked as a nurse for three years. She returned to Children’s Hospital of Winnipeg in 1928. Between 1942 and 1962 Jean Paterson worked at Swan River Hospital (1942), in Truro Nova Scotia (1944 – 1945), in Saskatchewan (1946 – 1947), at the Nipigon Hospital (1957), at the Glenboro Hospital (1962) and finally at the Riverdale Hospital in Rivers, Manitoba. She died in Brandon.

Custodial history

The records and artefacts of Jean Paterson were donated to the HSC Archive/Museum by her nephew, Brian Paterson between March 2017 and September 2018.

The collection contains items which reflect Jean Paterson’s nursing training and career. These items include medals, certificates, and photographs.
