Biographical history

Jean McKenzie began her dance training in Vancouver, but joined Gweneth Lloyd’s classes when her father was transferred to Winnipeg. She joined the Winnipeg Ballet Club in 1940 and performed with them until 1944 as one of its first principal dancer. From 1944 to 1946 she taught at the Vancouver School of Dancing before rejoining the Winnipeg Ballet. She earned her solo seal and advanced teaching degrees from the Royal Academy of Dancing in London, England. She married broadcaster Norman McBain in 1948, but continued to dance for the Royal Winnipeg Ballet for another two seasons. In 1962, she became the principal of the newly founded School of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and held that position until her retirement in 1985. During this time, she also taught at the Summer School of Fine Arts in Banff, Alberta and adjudicated at dance festivals. Jean McKenzie McBain passed away March 14, 1986 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. A dance scholarship and a studio at 380 Graham Avenue have been named after her.
