Biographical history

James White (1861- 1941) constructed a number of public buildings and residences in Carberry, Manitoba. He was born in Owen Sound, Ontario and came to Carberry in 1902 where he opened the Carberry Planning Mill which is now the site of the Carberry Plains Museum. White built a new shop in 1905, after which he sold it and opened a machine shop and foundry. His business built the Presbyterian, Anglican, United churches, and Carberry's gingerbread house. Further biographical information is unknown.

Custodial history

Records have been presented to the Carberry Plains Archives in 1988 by the [Carberry Plains Museum], in 1995 by Grace Hood of Carberry, Manitoba, and in 1996 by persons unknown.

Scope and content

Fonds consists of black and white photographs showing James White, White in front of his Main Street shop, the construction of Knox Presbyterian Church in 1909, views of the Carberry Planning Mill, White's hardware store on Fourth Street. Textual material includes deeds, mortgages, and correspondence for Block 40 Lots 17-23.
