James Thurston was born in Cleveland, Ohio and received a scholarship to train with the School of American Ballet and also received the Harkness Foundation Scholarship. He danced with the National Ballet of Washington, the American Festival Ballet, the New York City Opera Ballet, the Radio City Music Hall, and on Broadway. He was a principal dancer with the Nacional Ballet of Venezuela before joining the Royal Winnipeg Ballet as a soloist in 1967. He remained with the Company until 1969. He continued to work on Broadway. James served as dance director and instructor at the Ellington School of the Arts from approximately 1978 to 1982.
