James Mercer was born in Los Angeles, California, where he began his dance training. He later trained in Long Beach, California and spent two summers at the Banff School of Fine Arts before joining the Royal Winnipeg Ballet in 1970 as a member of the corps de ballet. He was promoted to first soloist in 1973, but left the following year. In 1977, he was performing with the Pennsylvania Ballet as a Principal Dancer. By 1986, he had retired from dancing and had a career in television.
The records of James Mercer came to the Royal Winnipeg Ballet Archives as part of a transfer of records from the RWB.
