Kenner Collection

The collection consists of Kenner family photographs and photographs depicting business and farming activities of John Howard Kenner (1870-1965) at Melita, Manitoba. The fonds also consists of photographs of Pierson General Store owned by William Staples Kenner (1863-1952) in Pierson, Manitoba. There are also photographs of Brandon General Hospital School of Nursing graduates Anna Catherine (McLaren) Kenner (1873-1965) and Miss Christina Macleod (1883-1976). Additionally, the collection contains the 1906 register from the Palace Hotel in Brandon, Catherine Kenner's in the Brandon General Hospital Alumni Association membership certificate, and a meal ticket from the Carleton Cafe in Brandon.

The South Western Manitoba Loyal Orange Lodge fonds consists of many certificates of membership; certificates of good standing; applications for admission; correspondence between local lodges and grand lodges; newsletters; pamphlets and brochures; annual returns; ledgers; minute books; and roll books. The fonds is divided into the following series: Membership: Certificates, 1841-1969; Membership: Membership Lists and Roll Books, 1904-1986; Financial Records: Ledgers, 1882-1986; Financial Records: Annual Returns, 1934-1977; Minutes, 1889-1985; Correspondence, 1904-1989; Publications, 1915-1995; and Miscellaneous, 1927-1981.

Shewan Family Collection

The collection consists of material created by and belonging to the Shewan and Malcolm families. Materials include one photograph, one certificate, books, handwritten letters, and other handwritten notes. There are multiple cookbooks, a family Bible, a personal notebook, a book of poetry, and other religious texts. The majority of the handwritten letters belonged to Catherine Shewan (nee Malcolm), and discuss the genealogy of the Malcolm family. Other handwritten materials include testimonials to the teaching ability of James Malcolm. Each item is described in detail at the individual level on the Daly House Museum database.

William John Burchill Family Collection

The material in this collection belonged to the Burchill/Stoll family. The collection includes photographs, paintings, books, written records, genealogical records, letters, and other documents. The majority of the photographs are of the William J. Burchill family of Brandon, Manitoba. There are many pictures of family and friends, especially of Burchill's daughters in childhood and youth; some are casual photographs and others are formal portraits. Photographs are from family events, weddings, social gatherings, school, and during recreational activities. Also included are photographs of Edith Burchill Stoll's family and friends during her adult life after moving to Illinois. Each photograph is described at the individual level. There are three albums of photographs and the rest are separate. Also included in the collection are portraits of members of the Gibson and McEvoy families. Two of these are oil paintings. There are also prints and needle work. There are books in the collection which belonged to different members of the Burchill Family. These include Bibles, prayer books, a hymn book, an atlas, personal notebooks, and collections of poetry. The collection also contains genealogical records, correspondence, and written histories pertaining to the Burchill family history and to the history of the Canadian Prairies. Other documents include, will and funeral records; birth, marriage and death certificates; letters, postcards, obituaries, and newspaper clippings.

Burchill - Stoll Family

Photographs and Other Textual Records

This series is comprised of records collected by the Assiniboine Historical Society. The series contains 78 photographs of early Brandon and the surrounding area. The majority of the photographs were taken between 1885 and 1920. Photographs include local businesses, farms, homes, schools, and construction of roads and buildings. There are also photographs of families, threshing gangs, and groups at town events. Textual records in the series consist of medical certificates and licences; property, mortgage and insurance documents; education booklets; and teachers' contracts. There are also family histories, books about areas and place names, and a souvenir book of photographs. Additionally the series contains a map of the Nipissing area in Ontario and a print of a painting of Western Canada's first shipment of wheat.

Scope and Content: The collection consists of material collected by Martin Kavanagh pertaining to the history of Manitoba. The majority of the textual documents are newspaper clippings from local newspapers. From where he obtained the photographs is unknown. The content of the fond pertains to the city of Brandon’s early history. The fond contains newspaper clippings about the city’s prominent members, clubs, events, schools, and businesses. It contains photographs of prominent building such as hotels, and other important businesses. The photographs document many areas of life in early Brandon including businesses, industry, agriculture, transportation, and education.

Kavanagh, Martin

Series 1: Photographs and Prints

The series contains photographs, newspaper prints, art prints, and negatives collected by Effie and Alex McPhail. The majority of the photographs were taken in Western Manitoba. These include pictures of farms, businesses, city streets, houses, the Brandon Council of Women, as well as graduating classes from Brandon College and Normal School. Photographs include family and friends of the McPhail and Weir families. There are also multiple portraits of unidentified children and adults. Additionally, there are pictures from Ontario of bridge construction, mining, and the Algoma shipwreck. There are photographs printed in newspapers of log cabins and farming. The collection contains five negatives. There are five artistic prints of paintings or drawings in the collection.
