This fonds, established by Sam Waller throughout his career, consists of materials accumulated on areas of interest to Sam, including taxidermy, natural history, stamps, religion and education. This fonds consists of correspondence, both written and received by Sam Waller from 1919 – 1978; notes written and observed by Sam on nature from 1923 – 1977; items regarding the Cree language, including dictionaries, correspondence and church-related materials; diaries written during his travels and missionary posts; literary works, spanning from short stories to anecdotes by Sam; as well as sermons and religious items. The Sam Waller fonds also includes museum notes and various other documentation, including legal documents and museum records from the inauguration of the Little Northern Museum until Sam’s death; and ephemera, including numerous pamphlets and guest books.

Correspondence

This series contains correspondence created and received by Sam Waller from 1919 until his death in 1978. The subjects covered in the correspondence are numerous, including regular correspondence with the Manitoba Museum regarding specimen acquisition, identification and trade, as well as regular correspondence with other natural history enthusiast, missionaries, businesses and various government bodies. Many files also contain associated material, including newspaper clippings and permits.

Correspondence in this sub-series covers deformed antlers, birds, Cree hymn book, Indian Schools, insurance, literary works, stamps, Trinity College and correspondence from students and teachers alike thanking Sam for allowing them to visit his collection.

This sub-series contains correspondence accumulated by Sam Waller from 1930 - 1978, both inward and outward organised by correspondent. Correspondence is organised alphabetically by correspondent. Correspondents include the Royal Ontario Museum, the Manitoba Museum, the Canadian Wildlife Services, Rev. R. B. Horsefield, Northgate Old Boys’ Association, and the University of Manitoba. Subjects covered in this correspondence include the identification of natural history specimens, the abundance of wildlife observed in particular regions, work on Cree language dictionaries, advice on collections, requests for specimens, etc.

This sub-series contains correspondence accumulated by Sam Waller from 1923 – 1978, organised by date, in chronological order. The correspondents in this sub-series include an RCMP officer writing a letter in acknowledgement of Sam's leaving Moose Factory, the Bishop’s Court of Winnipeg, Diocese of Rupert’s Land, the Department of Mines and Natural Resources Game and Fisheries Branch, Department of Health, Department of the Interior, the Ottawa National Museum, Lake St. Martin Indian Reserve and Huron College. Associated material in these files includes various newspaper clippings, and a wedding invitation.

Nature Notes

This series consists of notes on nature created by Sam Waller since his placement in Moose Factory, 1923, through to 1977. These notes include specimen records for mammals and birds in his collections, species lists for birds observed in a particular area, a rough manuscript for an article on the Canada Jay, permits for hunting migratory birds, and even a key to Sam’s collections.

Diaries

This series is comprised of the personal diaries written by Sam Waller while posted at Moose Factory, as well as several travel diaries, spanning periodically from 1930 to 1970. This series also has several access photocopies of the Waller diaries.

Literary Works

This series contains manuscripts and literary works created by Sam Waller between 1928 and 1976. These works include travel and geographical accounts, works on birds and animals, museum speeches, short stories and anecdotes, as well as a small assortment of miscellaneous manuscripts and historical accounts.

Sermons and Religious Items

This series consists of sermons, sermonettes, sermons in Cree syllabic and notes written by Sam Waller.

Notes

This series consists of notes written and compiled by Sam Waller from 1919 – 1978, on the Little Northern Museum and general notes on a variety of things, including First Nations education and legends, Khaki University, quotations, recipes, the Morgan Mineral Collection, Trinity College, and Wellerism humour, among others.
